Tip: write a date you're not sure of as "c. 1932". A guess is better than a gap.

How to fill in a family tree

  1. Start with yourself on the left, then your parents. Write what you know first; leave the rest for later.
  2. Ask the eldest relatives you can. They often know a great-grandparent's name, or a village, that nobody else does.
  3. Write a woman's maiden name. It's the one that leads to her own parents.
  4. Note where each fact came from ("Nani, 2026", "marriage certificate"). It settles arguments later.

When the paper runs out

A paper tree stops at four generations and can't hold photographs. In a Kumbaa archive the tree has no edge: brothers, sisters and cousins sit beside your direct line, each person has a page with their story and every photo they're in, and the family fills in their own branches.

FAQ

Questions

How do I print the family tree template?

Use your browser's Print and choose landscape. Choose Save as PDF instead to keep a copy or fill it in on a tablet.

What should I write in each box?

The person's full name (a woman's maiden name too), when and where they were born, and when and where they died. Write 'c.' before a date you're not sure of.

Is it really free?

Yes. No sign-up and no email address. Print as many as you like.

What if my family is bigger than four generations?

Print one for each great-grandparent and start them at the left, or keep the whole tree in a family archive like Kumbaa, which has no limit.
