Kumbaa vs Google Photos and WhatsApp

Kumbaa vs Google Photos and WhatsApp: where family photos go to last.

Most families share photos in a WhatsApp group or a Google Photos shared album. It works for this week. Kumbaa is for the photos you want the family to find, with everyone named, in twenty years.

What's the main difference?

Google Photos and WhatsApp are for sharing photos now. They're quick, free to start, and everyone already has them. But a family chat scrolls away, a shared album is a pile of photos, and the names you give faces in Google Photos are yours alone.

Kumbaa is for keeping them. Every photo sits in the family tree: faces found and named, each person's page showing every photo they're in, and the collection browsable by album, decade and place. It's private to the family, and it's still there when the phone changes.

Why don't my family's face names show up in Google Photos?

Because Google keeps them private to you. Its help says face groups and labels are only visible to you, aren't shared when you share photos, and aren't shared across accounts. So if you've spent an evening naming Great-Uncle Ron, nobody else in the family benefits.

In Kumbaa, naming is for everyone. Name a face once and Kumbaa suggests that person in other photos, for the whole family. The faces are found in your own browser as photos are added, not sent off somewhere.

What's wrong with the family WhatsApp group?

Nothing, for chatting. For keeping photos, three things. WhatsApp usually compresses photos when they're sent, unless you pick HD. The photos live on each phone and in each person's own backup, so they go missing when phones are replaced. And a photo from three years ago is buried under thousands of messages.

What does Google Photos do better?

A lot, for your own photos. It backs up your phone automatically, its search is excellent, it handles video, and it's free to start. Kumbaa doesn't back up your camera roll, and it isn't meant to. Use both: Google Photos for everything you take, Kumbaa for the photos the family should keep.

Which should you use?

Google Photos or WhatsApp is enough if…

  • You mostly share recent photos, to be seen this week.
  • You want automatic phone backup and search across your own library.
  • Nobody needs to know who's who in the old photos.

Choose Kumbaa if…

  • You're scanning old photos and want everyone in them named, for the whole family.
  • You want photos connected to a family tree, and stories to go with them.
  • You want the archive private, closed to search engines, and not used to train AI.
  • You want it to outlast the next phone, with weekly backups and downloads.

FAQ

Questions

Is Kumbaa a replacement for Google Photos?

Not for your phone's camera roll. Google Photos backs up everything you take. Kumbaa is for the family's photos you want to keep together, named and in the tree, and shared only with family.

Can my family see the names I give faces in Google Photos?

No. Google Photos' face groups and labels are private to each account and aren't shared when you share photos. In Kumbaa, a face named once is named for the whole family.

Are photos sent in WhatsApp full quality?

Not usually. WhatsApp says shared media is usually compressed. You can choose HD quality before sending, but it's still not the original file.

Who can add to a Google Photos shared album?

Anyone with access to the album can view it and add to it. Anyone with a shared link can view the photos.

Do the photos in Kumbaa count against our Google storage?

No. Kumbaa's 10 GB is separate, and shared by the family's archive. Photos in Google Photos count against the uploader's Google storage, which is 15 GB free across Gmail, Drive and Photos.

Can we still use WhatsApp?

Of course. Keep chatting there, and put the photos worth keeping in the archive, where the next generation can find them.

Your family's tree, photos and stories, in one private place.

Start an archive, invite the family, and let each of them fill in the branch they know best.
